Witches of Gulfport

Considered by many, including me, as one of the “ickiest” JAG episodes of all time. My review should be read with that in mind.

The main plot involves a coven of Wicca followers among the Seabees stationed in Gulfport, Miss – hence, the title. The leader of the coven is a male Chief who is accused of rape by one of his female, Wicca recruits. She says he cast a spell on her to make her submit to him. He says she was a willing participant.

For the JAGman investigation, Mac goes undercover, not only as a Navy N.C.O., but as a convert to Wicca, so she can observe the rites as well as the Chief. Harm and Bud are sent to the base as the formal JAG investigators, and they are met at the airport by Mac in her role as an N.C.O. There is a semi-cute scene where Harm asks the “Chief” to carry the bags for the two “ranking” officers, and she complies. She also revolts once they are away from prying eyes in the parking lot. ( To me, it’s the only thing in the ep worth watching. )

As the episode goes on, we see the investigation continue and watch the court-martial proceedings with Harm as the prosecutor. Some of the testimony is not for the squeamish. Also not for the squeamish is the single most talked-about, if revolting, scene in this episode -- Mac and Mic Brumby having a rather loaded, trans-Pacific, telephone conversation that many have described as “phone sex.” The only excuse I can find for TPTB letting this one slip under the radar of good taste is to establish that Mac’s trip down under to visit Mic (end of “Drop Zone”) ended up being more than casual. He speaks of all his sheets and towels still carrying her scent – and that’s the nicest image left by that conversation. (Yuck!)

Anyone uncomfortable with frank discussions about sex should probably stay away from this one, but DJE does an excellent job of keeping Harm’s questions and comments, throughout the court case, “in bounds” and “on point.” For an 8 o’clock show, some of the court testimony is pretty graphic, but DJE’s performance gives Harm just the right tone of professionalism. We have a sense of Harm’s deep sympathy for the women who feel they have been violated and anger at the man, or any man, who would inflict such sorrow on them. We see in Harm one man who really “gets it” when it comes to sexual predators like the Chief. We know his showing of righteous indignation is not just for effect in the courtroom.

On balance, the Witches of Gulfport is not one of JAG’s better efforts, IMHO, but if you’re curious enough, it might be entertaining. My recommendation – watch the first ten minutes, but not the last five.
