General Tips
Hopefully our rookie and low intermediate players will find tips that will help them to become better players by improving the art of warfare.
1. Never, ever turtle
I see that happen too often. As your economy grows, always expand forward as soon as possible.
Why?
- Claim the forward or no-man's-land resources -- Don't start by strip your base from gold and stone, then think about how to get more
- Claim territory, meaning freedom to move
- A forward base will be a pain in the a** for the enemy, will catch his attention and absorb the enemy fire instead of having the enemy raze your home base to start with
- You will get alerted and don't have to fight with the back against the border of the map.
2. Attack the presumably strongest enemy if possible
Why?
- As long as we are researching techs, advancing in age and booming the economy, then the power of a player on the battlefield grows exponentially with his economy.
- Let a good player boom untouched to imperial and mid imperial, you will lose because he will gather troops superior in numbers and, before all, in quality. He will get trebs, heavily defended, which will raze your base without you being able to do anything about it.
- Team up to do this (see next)
3. Double team / unit mix
Make up your team strategy to combine units which are hard to counter for the defender.
Example: one goes archers, the other cavalry. Or siege + pikemen/infantry
Keep your forces working together.
If fighting solo, produce effective combos.
4. Forward build
Bring villagers forward and have them build military buildings so that you can sustain production close to where the action is taking place.
- Have your allies help in defending your forward builders.
5. Build military buildings in numbers large enough
The thing with AOK is that buildings don't take population space. Therefore, invest surplus of wood into buildings which make it possible to quickly rally an army, where you need it, and when you
need it.
For instance, make half a dozen barracks + stables at home and you are relatively safe from cavalry raids, provided you have population space. Garrison your villagers and queue up what you need in terms of pikemen/camels/knights.
Same thing goes for land and resources you have claimed. Make it difficult for enemy to re-conquer it.
6. Castle location
A castle is the most expensive investment in the game. Try to get value for bucks, by placing it at a key location, covering resources, on an elevation, controlling choke point etc
7. Defending your castles
A castle WILL attack enemy forces. Learn to defend it as long as there is a good chance to keep it. In castle age, you have the advantage of protective castle fire. In imperial age, prepare to get
rid of enemy trebs. Build military buildings around to produce support troops.
8. Repair / heal
Always repair damaged castles, siege and key town centers. Mixing in a monk or two in your forces, really makes a difference.
9. Stances
Military units are, with the exception of onagers and rams, produced with aggressive stance. Put them on defensive and they won't run stupidly towards the closest target in LOS, just to get killed. Of course, when raiding/charging, the appropriate stance is aggressive.
10. Rally point / critical mass
Rule of thumb is that it pays off to have a critical mass before engaging in combat. Put rally point somewhere behind the front so that your military won't die in vain when created, in particular
against ranged units. Ten champions in group beat ten arbalests with quite many champions surviving, but send them one by one and they all die before reaching the arbalests.
11. Hotkeys
The importance of hotkeys cannot be overstated. Learn the hotkeys for the military buildings so that you can quickly produce military as the situation calls for it.
