Koontz has said that he deliberately wrote this in the style of Alistair MacLean (Guns of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare, Ice Station Zebra) as a change of pace and I think it's a smashing success. Apparently, others didn't, as he hasn't attempted this sort of Big Adventure again. Hollywood ought to take a look, however, as it's probably the most cinematic of his novels in a sweeping big-budget CGI blockbuster kind of way (the type James Cameron is known for).
