Cassidy got out of the car & waved to her mother. Then she turned around and ran up the winding drive way to the pretty brick house. Today was Tuesday, and she was giving 5 year old Candice White a saddleseat lesson. The little girl was grooming her pony Halo in the ailse. "Cass!" she exclaimed joyfully, running over. The 14 y/o stooped and picked her up, then swung her around. "Have you been practicing since last week?" she asked. "Yup." The little girl's curls bounced. "Halo has been too." "Oh, good." Cassidy smiled. Halo was an 11h Hackney. Candice quickly finished grooming the cute mare and then tacked her up with the child's saddlseat saddle & bridle. The 5 y/o mounted up and gathered the reins. Cassidy clipped on the lunge line and led them into the outdoor arena. "I thought I'd get to work off the lunge line," Candice whined, kicking Halo forwards. "Calm down, you will later," Cassidy smiled inwardly at the impatient little girl. For over 2 months she had been giving Candice lessons. She let out the rope. "Keep the walk flashy and smooth. Pick it up a little." Candice squeezed, pushing her heels down and loosening the reins. "Keep contact," Cassidy reminded the tiny rider. Halo obiedantly stepped up faster. After circling, Cassidy said, "rack!" Halo surged into a high stepping rack. Candice sat quietly and expertly. Then they reversed directions. Then Cassidy took the lunge line off and said, "Rack her down the long side of the arena and halt in the center." "Ok," Candice replied eagerly. She collected the reins and squeezed. The Hackney picked up slow, pretty rack down the arena. "Good, speed up," Cassidy called. "Leg!" The little kid tapped her heels against the pony's sides and Halo stretched out a little bit. Then the turned towards the center and halted squarely. "Good!" Cassidy was amazed at Candice's potential. She was only 5! Then she had to rack around the entire ring once in each direction, then do a high stepping canter transition, circle, and halt. After the lesson, Cassidy helped her untacked and groom the well behaved pony. "When are you going to show next?" Candice wondered aloud. "Sunday," Cass replied. "On Dazzlin' again." "Oo, it'll be fun! I'm gonna come watch!" the little girl exclaimed.
