Date Posted: 13:57:17 06/17/02 Mon "Can we go now?" Jon muttered impatiently, watching his 15 year old sister, Alli, tack up her fleabitten gray Arabian filly, Feather. I tightened my Trahkner stallion, Cobalt's girth, and said, "Jon, you may be 17 but you have the patience of a two year old!" Alli looked at me and said, "Mom, are you going to break Montana to the saddle tomorrow?" That caught Jon's attention. He said, "Why do you care? Montana's my horse!" I ignored this comment and said, "Yes, Alli. Mike and I are breaking Montana tomorrow." Seven minutes later, Alli was all tacked up and we were ready to go. Mike waved goodbye and called, "Listen to your mother!" We walked along a trail and Alli said, "Feather is acting great, Mom." I smiled watching the Arabian filly prance playfully, happy to be out after 2 weeks of recovery from an accident that had left her lame. "Delilah, is soooo slow." Jon complained. I laughed at that. Delilah was one of the best dressage horses that I had ever trained and Jon was complaining about her. "Delilah can go as fast as anyone when she has a good rider on her back." I stated. We came upon a large open field and I said, "Alright, I'm going to let you canter if you promise to keep under control and NO galloping." They agreed, "We promise!" I squeezed my legs on Cobalt and he flew foward into a fast spirited canter. They followed suit and as we moved along Cobalt began to pull at the bit. The temptation was just too great. I had to gallop. I squeezed softly and he pulled into a speedy gallop. After a few strides, I realized that I had told the kids that we wouldn't gallop. I had broken my own rule! I slowed down and Alli said, "If we can't break your rules, how come you can?" I didn't reply and they dropped the subject when we arrived at the beach. The sun glistened on the water and Jon said, "Cool!" We picked up a trot and went through the waves. Then I showed them the perfect spot for us to eat our picnic lunch. I spread it out while they took off their clothes and swam in the bathing suits they had worn underneath. I called, "Lunch!" and they ran up to eat. After that, I too ditched my clothes and swam. I took Cobalt's saddle off and mounted bareback. I rode out into the water and Cobalt began to swim and splash in the water. Jon and Alli both did the same. An hour later, I hated to say let's go but I had to. We put our riding clothes on and saddled up our horses. We rode back to the barn and Mike met us. He asked, "How was your ride?" Jon and Alli looked at each other before saying, "Awesome." We untacked the horses and headed home, in the truck with Jon and Alli blabbering about how great the ride had been. The picture of the bay Morgan is Delilah and the black Trahkner is Cobalt. I don't have a picture of Feather. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
