SAWALHA HIS PRIDE
Joker's gag ends in romance
It began as a running gag in a hit TV series but now it's a real-life romance.

Comic Richard Herring would bang on about how he fancied Absolutely Fabulous star Julia Sawalha.

His devotion to the actress became a running joke and featured in every episode of Herring and comedy partner Stewart Lee's hit BBC show Fist Of Fun - at one point in the series he built a shrine to Julia, complete with photos and candles. And there he'd pray that one day he would win her heart.

"My ideal woman would have the head of Julia Sawalha attached to the body of Julia Sawalha," joked the Oxford graduate.

Now the Ab Fab beauty has fallen for Richard for real. I can reveal that Julia has been secretly dating him for the past three months. They met for the first time earlier this year when the actress took part in a reading of Richard's new play Excavating Rita.

But their relationship has amused Richard's mates - because they knew he really was smitten for far longer than that.

He is Julia's first steady boyfriend for two years after she split with sculptor Carl Duncan when she decided she was too young to start a family. Richard, 33, once said before he met her, "If Julia Sawalha did come and say 'Let's get down to the business,' I'd run away." Fortunately he wasn't so nervous when their paths crossed.

The romance only emerged last week when Richard took Julia, 31, to visit his old school.

His dad Keith, a governor of Cheddar First School, Somerset, invited him to open its annual fete.

Richard decided this was the perfect opportunity to introduce Julia to his family.

A pal said: "It was a complete surprise to everyone that Julia arrived with Richard.

"They seemed very relaxed and happy together. All of Richard's mates find it hilarious - it really is a dream come true for him.

"He always fancied her from afar and now he's found they really can get along in person. He's chuffed to bits."

THE MIRROR, - Matthew Wright.
