I remember when the Oldham riots started, Blair would say that government wouldn't interfere - as it was a problem of Oldham town and should be dealt with by the Oldham mayor..
which was quite pathetic, I think...(and elections were due, besides... not that that would have anything to do with it...(?)
racism prevailing within a country should always be a matter worth being dealt with by government...
there's racist and fascist idiots roaming about more or less freely everywhere in the world...
and I find it terribly disturbing that quite often nothing can be done about that...
soon as there will be outright violence, law will be able to act.. but oft as not, racist propaganda can prevail freely as soon as it doesn't actually require people to commit crime...
Freedom of speech is one of the pillars of democracy and I'm much in favour of it.. but it's quite frequently stretched beyond its limits by neonazis or Klu-Klux-Klan members or morons propagating the theory of *arian-white-race-ruling-the-world*
Using the swastika symbol or denying the holocaust is a crime in (surprise) Israel and Germany - but nowhere else.
So that means that as long as anyone doesn't use a Israeli or German provider, they can publish disgusting racist propaganda in this respect - and law won't be able to do anything about it. So pseudo-historians like Irving (condemmned as falsificator of history by pros all over the world) can use the net to publish their crap - and quite frequently people who don't know much about that matter will stumble on that sort of *information* and take it for granted...
That does one make feel ever so sick..
