altho im no expert i think it has something to do wit the tilt of the earths axis,combined with the earths distance from the sun at this point in time

making the amount of time the sun is visible in the sky longer

but as to why we have to change the clocks ahead or back

when obviously if we were living in 6000 bc its very likely we wouldnt be setting them ahead

i have no idea
