Today is a tragic day in the life of the citizens of Alexandria. We've lost brave people...people who put all our lives ahead of their own for the better good of this community. These courageous officers were human beings...they laughed, they cried, they had both confidence and fear, they had joys and sorrows...they were people we might've passed in the mall, or bagged groceries for. They're people we might have served lunch to, or rung up at their favorite department store.
And just like you and I, they got up this morning and went to their job. But unlike most of us, they could never go to work 100 percent certain that their "work environment" would be safe for them. They made the decision long ago that their health, safety and well-being were not as important as upholding the law and keeping Alexandria a peaceful city.
They won't be coming back from their job today.
I hope you'll join me in a mission I personally intend to abide by for the remainder of my life. I hope you'll join me in making certain the next time they're in the streets, at the next concert or festival, or wherever their job calls them to, that we make sure they receive a healthy dose of appreciation, or at the very least a nod or smile.
I couldn't possibly know what they've gone through just to be ALLOWED to wear that shield....I couldn't possibly know how many times they've faced fear or terror and walked away unscathed....I couldn't possibly know how many times their lives have been in peril - just for the job.
So from this day, I will never take for granted the duties of our police officers. What they do on a daily basis shows more courage than most of us can muster. And they do it, more often than not, with a smile, and a sense of community pride.
To those who've lost loved ones on this tragic day, I can only imagine the deep sense of loss you must feel...but I am also certain that you have a sense of "pride" as well....pride in knowing that your loved was doing what they'd set out to do all along....their job. Your loss is a community's loss, and we all mourn as one.
Sincerely,
Ron
