Actually, reading about drug history is really fascinating. For example, Coke used to contain cocaine. Cocaine was routinely used by the middle and upper class, just as people take ibuprofen today. It wasn't until it became associated with blacks ("cocaine-crazed Negroes") that it was criminalised.

Opium was associated with the Chinese. And marijuana was the demon drug of the Mexican.
