Perhaps I'm not explaining myself. When you say "the Chinese," even without context, the thing referred to has a connection to China. The coin, or person, or vase in question is a Chinese coin, or Chinese person, or Chinese vase. But when you say "the blacks," the word "blacks" is too general to be anchored to a people or a culture. Without context, "the blacks" has no humanity to it.

I realize that in the quote in question there WAS context, but that doesn't negate what I'm trying to explain: that the term itself, even when used in a positive context, is objectionable to some because the context is *all* that gives the term a human or cultural association.

I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well; perhaps I'll get some sleep and try again tomorrow.
