Hello there! I am the original person who used term "the blacks" on the BC thread, so I guess I was invited here to air my feelings about the whole mess!

First of all, I was HORRIFIED that I was told I had spoken (typed) in a racist manner. I immediately apologized and moved on. But, I didn't agree with her at all.

The fact is, our language is what we make of it. When I say "the blacks who fought against oppression" (or whatever the hell I said) it was a COMPLIMENT to those people. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would be offended.

Now, I have no problem changing my use of a word for the sake of someone in a context who happens to find it offensive. That's what I did at BC. But I cannot accept that my use of words was racist per se.

I was also extremely teed off that we weren't allowed to discuss it (not mad at the hosts, but at the people who said "you can't discuss it because you're not black.) First of all, how do they know I'm not? Secondly, that attitude does nothing for the sake of conversation value.

Anyway, that's my two cents.
