remember how i said... out of respect for me, sometime in May they turned off the cable and did nothing but movies?

well... that was may of 03 right? the cable was never turned back on and we can't get channels at all. they still watch lots of movies.

my husband, the(former)t.v.-holic, says he doesn't miss it, but the beauty of it is: both he and my 16yr daughter have now experienced that feeling you get when someone else rolls their eyes and says they CAN'T BELIEVE you don't have t.v.! they both described to me smiling to themselves... and both noticed advantages they've gotten out of its absence. i certainly have. i think they've entertained a little pride in giving up their dependence. we have something shared now: none of us recognize the commercials from may of 2003-today, and that feels like a triumph against unwanted psychological programming.

my sons, 12 & 18 yrs, do miss it, but i notice they are forced to find other past-times, which is so very worth it. since then, 3 of us have started going boating and jet-ski-ing, and the 12yr and 16yr old have "gotten up" on the wake board- (some day i will, but i'm only 1/2way to my weight-loss goals... and it takes strong muscles.) my 12yr old is into archery, and both my teens are working. there's less resistance to healthy lifestyle things like walking, and eating right.

maybe one day we'll turn it back on, just in case... regarding the news. i am glad we had t.v. during 9-11 even though it was so painful... but i'm in no rush. only the superbowl was an issue... and there are so many avenues for that... they have had the opportunity to turn it back on and it wasn't important enough to make the effort.

once again. i didn't make them do it. i guess i DID guilt them into it. i feel like i'm entitled to some of my life being lived t.v.-free because that's MY value, and i pay at least half the bills. still, they did it more as an experiment and before they knew it... months had gone by. i was the first one to realize it had been a year.
