I also want to mention that being competitive does not at all mean you have to be violent. As long people know how proper sportsmanship, I think games and sports are an example of competition that isn't violent, even if it is physical. If things like Football cause you to have doubts, keep an eye on things like professional bicycle racing (and now that I think about it, especially the Tour De France winners of the last few decades). One of the reasons I like cycling is that those athletes have a tendency to act more like human beings and not machines, it's often friendly but very intense competition.

Unfortunately in the absence of other values I think people have a tendency to not keep competition in perspective, so things like violence or similar attitudes enter our lives (and video games, etc.)
