Your mare is bieng a good mother protecting her foal, it's what most horses do. You'll soon gain the trust of both, but don't go by your approch it could be harmfull to the mare. I will not leave the food in the trough and walk away like I did before. I want her to know that she must come to me and allow me to touch her baby before she can have the food. She's not going to learn. Her behavior is natural let the foal grow up a little, and she'll be less protective.
