Subject: Horse gone crazy

Does anyone have any advice that can help me? I bought a 12 yr. old TB gelding in Oct. He was raced young, injured, used as pony horse and then sat in field for 1 yr. &1/2 (according to prev. owner). He started out quiet and sweet. We did a lot of flat work. Then we (both) started learning to jump. My trainer thought he really seemed to like it & he did well (me too). After a few months I fell off. When I went to him he was trembling and shaking. I calmed him down (or tried), got back up & jumped again. Then it happened again (my fault this time). He was a shaking mess, very scared, and instead of me getting back on him the trainer did, which went O.K. Then, a 3rd time, (trainer had me jumping w/o stirrups to get better position and I "goosed" him). Shortly after that he began getting very freaky in the ring. He is now acting very HOT, chomping bit, fighting bit, throwing head high, and backing up and spinning like crazy. I am afraid of him now. I had the trainer ride him after the last episode. Here is my prob. Trainer carried a crop (I don't have a prob. w/ crops - I know their purpose) but proceeded to whack away at him for a good 1/2 hour or more. He came in with whelts and to cuts on his flanks, one was bleeding. Trainer knows I was upset but obviously feels my horse has serious "submitting" issues. I think they blame this on me for "spoiling" him with treats etc... (I do, but I'm not THAT bad). Trainer now says that horse is just mad b/c I've been pulling on him while riding and he's frustrated and had enough. I admit to pulling (although I had really been trying to work on pull-release) but I am really confused at this whole mess. This is not how I saw my return to the horse world and am seriously thinking quitting. There is no pleasure and now I'm scared. I feel like I have ruined my horse. ANY help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
