Subject: Locking your mare in stall when due to foal

Need advice. I have been told that I need to lock my mare in her stall at least two weeks before foaling due to the fact that she needs to acclamate herself to the bacteria in the area. My mare has been in the turnout and open stall for at least 3 months. Is this neccessary, because she is a pacer and might blow up inside the stall. She is a very high strung thoroughbred. We tried to shut her in and she starting her pacing routine immediately. Should I have reason to worry about the foal being born in the turnout area? She is 331 days along and about to foal. Please help. I am extremely nervous about this delivery. I have already lost a foal from another mare.

Barbara
