Subject: MARE WON'T LET ME TOUCH FOAL

I purchased mare already 5 months in foal. She was easy to catch, saddle and ride, but was still anxious and showed fright response when picking up feet to clean or when using spray bottle to apply insect repellent. She would come when I called her (to see if I had feed) and would allow me to touch her, brush her and (with my husband's help holding her head), I could give her worming medicine. She does not like loud noises or quick movements so I have always been trying to stay calm when around her...hoping to get her to accept me and realize that I would not hurt her. Now, she has her new foal and, although she will allow me to touch her, she will not allow me to touch her foal. When I get close enough, she walks away with the baby and I do not know what to do. She keeps her body between me and the foal and will back up, encircle the baby and walk away when I get to close to him. I am now trying to get her to come to me to eat. I will not leave the food in the trough and walk away like I did before. I want her to know that she must come to me and allow me to touch her baby before she can have the food. Is this the correct way to handle this. I was able to touch the foal shortly after his birth, but was not there at delivery. He was about an hour or so old before I discovered that he had been born. I touched him all over and put my hands all around his face and head and rubbed him all over. My mare had him in the field and he was not contained, so I could not control the mares movements. She began immediately to walk away with him...following closely behind. He is two days old now and I still cannot touch him. I need someone to tell me what I should do about this situation. Help...! Thanks!
