Subject: Belgian with Clinical Laminitis, can he recover fully???

Hello all,
I have not posted here before but I need advise.

I bought a 16- 17 year old Belgian gelding at an estate
auction. He was under weight and his feet not great but not horrible either.

We started him on a good quality hay and a bit of equine senior. When we got him to my friends farm we started him on small portions of 11-12% protien grain as well as lots of hay and have increased it over the last couple of weeks. He is also on MSM, Biotin, and Glucosamine. He has plenty of water available, is stalled at night. My friend has two percherons and two belgians of her own
We have ridden him very little and he pulled a buggy once at a walk a month ago.
Last Friday he was very sore, and did not want to stand.
He did not get better over the weekend so we went to a great vet. By the way I live in Wisc.
He had blood work which came back fine, and his x-rays show no rotation but he does have high and low ring bone and some arthritis. All of which the vet said is chronic to drafts. And we stopped his grain all together.
He is one 4 tablets of Bute a day for a week then down to 2 a day for a week then 1 a day for a week.
That seems a long time and we want to see how he does next week. His soreness and pain have disappeared with the Bute.
But when we end his regimine of Bute what are his chances of a good and useful recovery, and what could have caused it. We did change hay recently but are going to go back to the previous one.
If he were going to get laminitis would it not have happened sooner??
If any one has a clue, I am just beside my self, I got this gentle giant to ride and to have fun with and now I am not
sure if I will ever be able to get on him again.
Please email me ASAP

Thank you all so much.
Carol
