Subject: Teaching youngsters to pick up feet

I recently acquired an 11 month old Paint colt and filly. They had no previous training. When the farrier came to do their first trim, the filly was great for 3 of the legs, but when he got to her right rear she resisted. He ended up tying her to a rail in the stall near the wall so she could lean up against the wall to balance herself. But now whenever I go to pick her feet, she is great on the other 3 feet except when I get to that right rear. It is a struggle to get her to pick it up and when she does it is either for a quick second, or she kicks back and forth with it in my hand. Any suggestions on how to train her to pick up her foot? I've tried squeezing the chestnut, praising her when she does lift it even for a second. Should she be reprimanded in any way when she knows what we are trying to do? Today my husband got his toes stepped on and I almost got knocked over backwards trying to get her to just lift the foot. Thanks for any advice.
