"The balance of nature, of course," Natil says kindly. So many of these questions could they answer themselves if they only thought of it. If they only looked deeper. "It is the balance that holds life together, without it, all things would fall apart."

Natil lets out a ragged exhale, despite himself. He fights what is coming as much as he can. The younger wolves must learn. But it is easy to see now that Natil will not hold up much longer. He can sense some of WindChaser's regret and he smiles enigmatically to her, reassuring. "I have lived for longer than I can remember now," he tells her comfortingly, "and seen more than many wolves. But while I am here, I will help you however I can."
