I have always loved and hated Mirror Image for the questions it raised.
I still remember my girlfriend coming back from the States in 93 saying: "Quantum Leap finished, and Sam doesn't go home"
Very sad day.

Anyway, I think the fact that Sam leaps in at the exact moment of his birth disrupts the way things are (or is this an alternate dimension?)
And don't give me that "It's a dream" cop out!
I mean, he's himself! Thats the first indication that something odd is happening here!
I feel its a chance for Sam to go on a higher level of leaping.
I agree that this was the start of something deeper, a storyline that was to continue into the next season.
(As per Sam talking to Beth at the end)
Sams perceptions are challenged in this episode - nothing is as it seems. It may be due to God/Fate/Time (or Al the bartender) opening Sam's perceptions to the possible leaps ahead (the "more tougher" ones)

My mind wandered when Sam asked if the leaps would get tougher (in what has to be the best acting by Scott ever).
Was he going to encounter more leapers? Dead leapers?

I have other views but maybe for another time, when I can put them into words, I'll be back!
