Meet Miss Florida:
All I Need To Know About Being Miss Florida USA, I Learned From Carrie Mewha . . .
(from www.LeadingLadyMagazine.com)

23-year-old Carrie Mewha will soon hand over her Miss Florida USA crown to a new queen. However, this brainy beauty has definitely made her mark on the title in the past year, spotlighting the best values of a Florida queen.

1. Study, study, study.
This queen is much more than a pretty face. An academic achiever from an early age, Carrie was a National Merit Scholar and graduated valedictorian of her class at St. Petersburg High School. Then she went on to graduate magna cum laude from the University of Florida in 2001 with a degree in Microbiology and Cell Science and a biochemistry research distinction award.

She just finished her first year of medical school at the University of Miami where she's a member of the University of Miami Academic Honor Society. When she finishes, she plans a career in internal fetal medicine, helping mothers have healthy babies.

2. Persistence pays off.
Everyone around Carrie comments on her singular dedication to her goals. Last year, she was 4th runner-up in the Miss Florida USA pageant. Undaunted, she entered again this year and came home with a crown (not to mention a mink)!

3. Get over yourself . . .
. . . and think about others. Kids have a special place in Carrie's heart. She spends a good deal of every week volunteering in a Miami free clinic, and she's also done work with the Ronald McDonald House in Broward County. In 2000, when she was crowned Homecoming Queen at the University of Florida, Carrie also won the Volunteer Award for her work with disabled children.

4. If you want it, work for it.
You have to have stamina to be a queen -- and very good time management skills. When she was younger, Carrie cleaned out horse stables to pay for her hobbies, whether that hobby was entering pageants or horseback riding. These days, Juggling public appearances - from charity bowling with Shaquille O'Neal to cooking at the Ronald McDonald House - finishing her first year of medical school and preparing for the Miss USA pageant has kept Carrie on her toes.

Because the costs of competing can escalate, Carrie secured sponsors for her Miss Florida USA wardrobe; our cover photo shows her in a RistaRose gown from Malindy Elene Bridal (www.malindyelene.com).

5. Don't be afraid to surprise people.
Carrie started surprising people early; she was nearly born on a football field! Her father was coaching St. Petersburg High and her very pregnant mother went into labor before the game was over. Today, she sticks to surprising people with her brains, beauty and four-foot-long Columbian boa constrictor.

6. Keep trying new things until you find your passion.
Carrie tried quite a few hobbies and sports -- soccer, dancing, softball - until she found something that fit like a glove. A dedicated horsewoman, she was a member of the UF equestrian team and recently competed in the National Finals Horse Show.

7. Enter regional pageants.
Regional pageants are a great place to hone your interviewing skills, pick up tips, and win scholarship money! Carrie is a pageant veteran. Though she won the first pageant she entered at the age of 15 (Miss Teen Florida), that win can be accredited to hard work, community service and scholarship (and, admittedly, being beautiful). She was also University of Florida Homecoming Queen 2000, Miss Daytona Beach 2001, Tau Kappa Epsilon International Sweetheart, and Miss Broward County USA 2003.

8. Be prepared.
You might think to look at Carrie that she was born with a perfect body, but she spent an hour and a half every day working out to prepare for the swimsuit competition. No guts - no glory!

To prepare for her Miss Florida USA interview, she watched CNN every day, making sure that she stayed well apprised of world events. Then she utilized pageant "coaches" to help prepare her for the judges. A coach can help a contestant develop poise and overcome any nervousness about public speaking.

9. Speak your mind.
Have an opinion and don't be afraid to let it be heard. At 13, Carrie started an environment club at her school and was quoted in the St. Petersburg Times as saying, "Ozone depletion, rain forest destruction, garbage on our beaches, it stinks."

Ten years later, she's still outspoken about causes that matter to her. Recently, she spoke to Congress about a pending medical liability bill, calling on Sen. Bob Graham (D, Fla.) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D, Fla.) to pass tort reform in the U.S. Senate this year. "Our medical liability system is so clogged with frivolous lawsuits that medical students are thinking twice about entering high-risk specialties," she said, like the area of obstetrics that she wants to enter.

10. Stay in touch.
Remember the people back home, and they'll remember you. At the 5th Anniversary of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida (where Carrie currently resides), the mayor proclaimed it Carrie Mewha Day.

Carrie keeps in touch with her fans via the Miss Florida USA website and answers their emailed questions. If you'd like to write to Carrie, you can send messages to info@missfloridausa.com.
