I'd never seen this movie before and for that, I am glad. I wasn't ready to see such a nuanced picture. This is a mature film and requires a junkies mentality to appreciate it.

It also settles the question once and for all of who is cooler: Robert Redford or Warren Beatty.

Redford makes Warren look like Ned...in "Deliverance."

Where "Bulworth" goes off the rails instantly, "The Candidate" resists this throughout the entire movie. Redford's tantrums are never contrived for cynical sentiment (like Michael Douglas' LUDICROUS speech at the end of "The American President").

Even though it never realizes on the contrived ending it does slowly pick up steam throughout the entire film. I wish I had some Adderall.

I've never been a big Redford guy but he is amazing in this. The scene of him losing it on the way to the TV set is incredible. He's dead on and hilarious. I feel good about envying everything he is.

I'm sure there's a lot of folks out there, like Jeneane Garafalo, who will see this and hail it as prescient. It's not. It's simply a liberal thesis from 40 years ago that may or may not have come to fruition but those on the Left continue to ineffectually respond to events with this same narrative.

One day will figure out whose ideals are closer to the Founders; then hopefully we'll realize that they were only men. Racist men. Like Mr. B.
