Thank you Rayna, haven't heard from you in a while, hope you are well. I tell everyone that you can get a bad Boerboel from ANY of us... it is just the nature of breeding dogs that they do not all come out good, and unfortunately in this breed we still have some problems to breed away from.

About testing puppies; My biggest peeves are buyers who want me to select them a 'breeding quality pup' at eight weeks of age...or a buyer that has read some book that tells him/her that they MUST have the pup at eight weeks to bond with their family, and here is the EXACT temperament they need. Pretty tall order...

I have a tried and true method for picking my next breeding quality puppy, I have used this method for over 30 years with a great degree of success, and I will now share it with the board...anyone is free to use it, what was once my little secret is now in the open.

What you do is this; Buy or make a litter of pups...Boerboel, Brittney, Heeler, it does not matter, this method will work for ANY working breed...Step two, keep ALL the pups of the sex you want to work, step three, work all the pups at the intended job until through natural selection, injury, death, exhaustion, dumb-luck, or accidents you determine how they rank...keep getting rid of the pups that stumble or can't learn the job, and at about 18-24 months, if you have narrowed it down to the best two pups, give the second best one to your friend, and move forward with the BEST one to your breeding program. THIS WORKS! Finally a simple test available to all.

I never sell 'breeding qualiy pups'...how would I know?
If you buy a 'working quality' pup and you got him at eight weeks, you and the breeder are just hoping. There are some breeds that are so bred to task that it is very likely the dog will operate AT SOME LEVEL in that work, but there are always top-dogs, and those that just get along. Boerboels need to be bred to task, but no-one wants to agree on what that task is. I say we all do our own thing, stay out of each others way, or God forbid, cooperate, and see who has the dogs in ten years.

Good to see you Rayna, please don't think I am preachin' at you...I just got a lot to say these days :)

David
