Sara you are correct regarding how a particular coat protects from the heat. Additionally it is more so the humidity, along with the heat, that has the most deleterious effect on dogs when endurance is the issue and typically the humidity is the highest in the early morning and early evening. A close second is a dog that is short of muzzle as dogs dissipates heat through their muzzle, followed closely by a dog that is overly muscled and to wide, coupled with short legs i.e., unbalanced.
