Subject: The Irony of It All! Buying a Boerboel Puppy, and Reading Between the Lines

I hate posting this message, but I was haunted by some images of Boerboels being used as breeding dogs that were kenneled in some cheap wire reinforced with barbed wire. The breeder of these particular dogs is from South Africa, but it could have been anywhere. When I asked why the dogs needed barbed wire on the outside of the kennel, I was told that it was so the dogs wouldn't get stolen due to the high crime rate in South Africa, and that I should respect them for the prized dogs that they were.

I'm not sure about you, but when I look for a good protection dog I want one that protects me, not the other way around. Most importantly, it saddens me to see dogs used as cash machines strictly for breeding and never leaving their kennel run. On a good note, the dogs looked well fed. As for respecting "prized" dogs, all I can say is that respect is earned, and none of these dogs has earned even one ounce of my respect.

I have some advice for anyone looking for a puppy -- visit the breeder if at all possible, and don't support a breeder who is selling puppies from kennel dogs. They don't have a clue as to the temperament of that dog, and you won't have any clue as to the temperament or health of your puppy. Don't support the shrewd marketers with their wild claims. If for some reason you can't visit the kennel, do your research first and ask tons of questions. I also understand that EBBASA offers a service of visiting kennels in SA, and will give you their honest opinion. I don't know the cost of this service, but I think you can be assured that it is money well worth spent.

I imagine that my candid post will anger some crap breeders and charlatans. This is a message that is worth the grief that I can expect from my honesty.

Sharon B
