Subject: Outcrossing to other breeds

I wouldn't call myself "dyed in the wool SABT" but I am a member and do use their registration system, so possibly can comment.
The SABT re-opened their Development Register a year or so ago and will now appraise and register (on the DR) dogs of unknown parentage, provided they attain 80% at appraisal. So they have to score higher than dogs of registered parentage. (Don't ask me why, I don't know and haven't thought that one through, possibly the lack of known parentage is seen to have to be compensated for in a higher score?). The dogs remain on the DR and their progeny are registered on the DR (subject to attaining 80% minimum) for a minimum of 3 generations. If the 3rd generation dogs score higher than 85%, they are then transferred over to the main register, if they don't, they stay on the DR. So in effect it is possible that outcrosses could be registered as long as they look like Boerboels and could be integrated into the gene pool by the back door. I'm not sure of the relative merits of doing this and any "sign of another breed" is a disqualifying fault, so the system is designed to allow previously unregistered, but "purebred" (I use the term advisedly) Boerboels to be recovered from the cold if "discovered" roaming the Bush and Veldt!
It doesn't promote honest breeding of outcrosses, but I guess that's not something a breed registry is really interested in at the moment.

I think EBBASA have a similar but less stringent policy of registering dogs of unknown parentage.

I have a few questions too:

Should there be a separate registration system for proven outcrosses? By proven I mean that they have achieved the aim of the breeder embarking upon this route and introduced or reinforced the desired trait.

How would their value to the breed be assessed?

Their impact is more likely to be recognised several generations down the line, so how could one quantify their value before then or should breeders reassess after say, 3 generations and register the 3rd generation if it worked out as planned?

An outcross would presumably be brought in for a specific reason, so should the breeder "justify" this reason to the registry before embarking on this route or is it a personal thing?

Does the ancestry of a Boerboel actually matter if it's a good dog and reliably produces good dogs?

How much value should be placed on a pedigree when making breeding decisions?

More questions than answers from me I'm afraid.

Jenny
