I think experience is the main factor and the ability to learn from that experience. I spent my early dog years with dog men and women who had been successfully breeding and/or working their respective breeds for, in some cases, over 50 years. They had learned by their successes but had recognised their failures, were honest about them and used the information to further their goal of breeding better dogs. I never cease to be amazed at the memories of true dog people, they can recall dogs, pedigrees and minute details from yesterday or years and years ago. They live and breathe dogs. The dedication of true dog people stands out a mile.
