It sounds to me like your Father may have had an episode with sleep paralysis. Chances are, he felt an overwhelming sense of fear during the episode. This is probably why it has left such a lasting impression with him. Although sleep paralysis is, for the most part, categorized as a sleep disorder, it is anticipated that most of the population will experience this phenomena at one time or another. For some individuals, this is a common occurance. The difficulty many people have with this type of experience is that it seems so real. This is because it usually happens during the transition of the mind into a waking mode from sleep (and vice versa). The figures that appear are the result of hypnogogic and/or hypnopompic hallucinations. They result from being awake enough to have conscious thought, but still somewhat asleep to dream. That's what makes it so real. Sometimes, there is no visible manifestation at all, rather, a feeling of being choked, strangled, or a threateningly heavy pressure around the neck and chest. All this and sometimes people will experience the inability to move. As if they are pinned down by some unseen force. As terifying as this may all seem, such episodes are of natural origin. I'll include a link (http://www.periodicparalysis.org/PPRC/Sleep/)so you and others can read more about sleep paralysis. Also, look it up in an online search engine. It truly is a fascinating subject. The website I provided gives only basic information. Others go into extreme detail.
