Tom,
I grew up in a town 20 minutes from Gettysburg,(Hanover) and lived there for 28 years. I too had a exsperience at Gettysburg. I and three friends were visiting the park, we were teenagers and just killing some time before other plans. we were at Devil's Den about one hour before dark, we were joking around and talking about what may have happened during the battle that had ocurred in 1863. In retrospective our comments were not respectful of those men whom lost there lives there. We were standing on the road or path that passes the den, we were all looking out to the right of the den and exchanging comments. I felt a shiver on a very warm day and turned to look behind me. I saw a man, dressed in what I then thought were just ragged clothes, I felt a sense of unease from this person, I wasn't afraid I just knew something was not right. He was laughing in a low voice and smiling what I would call an evil grin at me. I turned to my friends and joked, probably to relieve my uneasy feelings, that " I didn't know there were a lot of Bums in Gettysburg". My friends looked to me and I motioned to the man behind me. My friends saw No one. I looked behind myself again and I saw no one. First he was out of my sight for only a few seconds, Second there was nowhere for him to go to be out of my sight in that time period, Third he was only about 10 to 12 feet from me when I saw him I would have herd something if he moved away. I had no explination for this and after a day or so passed it off as there must be a logical explination that I didn't think of. A few years later a friend gave me a book as a gift, "The ghosts of Gettysburg" by Mark Nesbitt. In that book I found a story about a man seen in the location of Devil's Den. He is dressed in ragged clothing, that of a confederate soldier well worn from battle. From the rest of the story and descriptions I then became a believer! I knew what I had saw was this ghost, sighted by others. As for the laugh and grin that I had exsperienced, perhaps he didn't care for comments of myself and my friends.........
