John,
The place you are referring to is called Hawk Mountain. It is about an hour and a half north of Philly and about 35 minutes north of Allentown. It is now a bird of prey sanctuary. Its actually about 20 minutes from where I live. It is on the Blue Mountain in northern Lehigh Valley in a small town called Kempton. The man you are talking about is Mathias Schambacher. On his deathbed he admitted to a priest and his own wife that he killed too many people to remember. His original place is still there and also the barn where many murders occured. He is burried not too far from Hawk Mountain at New Bethel Cemetary which is also said to be haunted by old Mathias. You can see pics from there on our website. We have investigated it a number of times. Being at the Schambacher place at Hawk Mountain is a very eerie feeling, especially at night. From what I know there was'nt any type of cannibalism going on. He killed settlers traveling from one side to the other of the mountain. He hid there remains in his barn, his yard, and down his well. The only road that crossed the mountain in that area ran right by his place. The whole story can be found in the book,Ghost Stories of the Lehigh Valley. Our website is www.geocities.com/lvghs
