I killed several birds with one stone on this part of my equipment by buying a digital video camera with night vision and high powered zoom (admitadly the large part of the zoom is digital and hence, not the best, but it does do a great job). The price is a tad prohibitive, but if you want to have a camera, night vision, digital capabilities and the ability to get in close, well, you can do all those things in one shot with a decent Sony Digital camcorder for just under a grand.

Also wanted to mention, the best place to find certain types of field equipment, including EMF, thermal and other devices, believe it or not, E-Bay. You'd be surprised. Some old military equipment can be had for literally pennies, but you have to get the probes elsewhere or make 'em yourself most of the time.
