I've had experiences similar to those that you described with my cats. When we first moved into our current apartment, we did not have any pets. One night I was woken up by the distinct sound and feeling of soft little foot steps on my comforter...and then the weight of a cat walking up my leg and then sitting on my chest. As I came fully awake, the sensation disappeared. I've never been visited by that cat again. We've since adopted two kittens who occasionally stare at invisible spots on the wall and on the couches, I've often wondered if they can see the other cat.
