Subject: Design Scenario 1 : Radio + MP3 player design

Design Scenario 1:
Karen tries using an MP3 player for the first time
-----------------------------------------------------------

Karen is out shopping for an MP3 player this afternoon. She has never owned one herself, but has seen her grandson with one. She wants to try out all the features offered in a few players, so that she would be able to compare between the players available, before she settles to buy one. She picks up one of these players, which plays both radio as well as MP3 music[1]. She switches it on, using the power button. When she presses a tiny light comes on[2], but there is no sound[3]. She figure she must do something else, also to use this device to play music. She then hunts for a mode button[4] or something that will allow her to see how the MP3 player works. She turns the player sideways, and reverses it to look for this button, but doesn’t find it. Then she looks at the top and sees it there. She presses it and nothing seems to happen. She presses it again[5] and the radio comes on. She figures out that by pressing the button twice you can switch to radio mode. She presses it yet one more time and once again nothing happens. She turns to look at the front side of the player and notices that there is a tiny display screen[6], which is flashing ‘MP3’ message. Karen realizes that this display will allow her to know what mode she is in. She also realizes that when she had pressed the button for the first time, the MP3 player should have come on. She is now able to see ‘MP3’ flashing in the display screen area. She is unable to hear anything[7]. She doesn’t know why and figures that maybe it has a low battery or there is no music downloaded in this player for her to hear. She thinks that is really funny since this player is on the display for customers to try out. She decides to wait till one of the customer-service staff in the store walks by and she can ask for help.
