NO, you misunderstand. This news is correct, i'ts true.
"made me smile a bitter smile" means "My complicated feeling that Japanese has a bad reputation on its package tour, their manner is not always good especially when they are in a group. It's a shame to go to Istanbul just to see one man. On the other hand I think he is not an ordinary man, he is special. I want to see him , shake hands with him , talk with him and want to see him smile once more.
