Subject: Splicing a new roof

Adding an attached garage to my house. House roof is 4 years old, 40 year shingles. I need to splice the garage roof to the existing house roof. Do I need to remove shingles on existing house or can I try to get flashing under the existing shingles. There are 2 valleys where the new roof overlaps the existing house roof. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you have valley metal in your valleys I'd recommend taking it to the valleys. If it planes into the other roof I know of no flashing made to tie these together. I have always tied into the existing roof by carefully breaking the seals on the existing roof and tying into the full shingles on the existing roof. Removing the pieces that were cut to fit of course. Now that the seal strip has been damaged by this you will need to manually seal down the shingles that you broke loose with a product like rain buster or something similar.

Hope this helps,
