Subject: difference between a hip roof and gable roof

How do you tell if you have a gable roof or a hip roof? The reason I ask is I am thinking about installing attic pull down steps, and cutting through a few joists will be neccesary to accomplish this. Thanks.

If you click my FYI link and then choose roof terminolgy it will display a image with the differences in the roof lines named.

You could also scan through these pages at easyrafters.com to get an idea to identify these roof lines.

Hope this helps,
