Subject: how to attach patio roof to existing roof

I'm building a patio roof on the back of my house. The eaves extend 18" from the house, with a 2x6" connected to the rafter tails. The patio beams (4x6) are about 9'8" away from the 2x6 fascia. My first idea was to lag bolt the 2x6 fascia into the house rafters, then attach the patio roof rafters directly to the fascia (with hangers or nailed). But I've read that this may put a lot of stress on the house roof rafters.

The ledger under the eaves is too low for my roof, so my second idea is to attach the patio rafters directly to my house roof (good pictures on p.118 of "Patio Roofs and Gazebos", Sunset book). The rafters would attach to a 4x4 beam attached to the roof via metal saddles (connector that bolts to the roof rafters and has a plate where the beam sits) or they would attach to two 2x6's laid flat on the roof and bolted into the rafters. I haven't been able to find those funky looking metal saddle connectors on the Internet or at Home Depot.

Any better suggestions or critiques?

thx,
-Jason

I always would set the rafters on the wall. I would take the over hang off the existing roof and the pitch transition would occur above the wall.

I've seen this done many different ways, this is just how I do it.

Just my opinion,
A Roofer
