"In Mi Opinion, I Think The Old 289 60 Degree High Performance Small Block V8 Out Performes The 1996-2002 281 CID 4.6L DOHC 32V Cobra V8"

The 289 isn't a 60 Degree but a 90 degree V8. The 289 High Pro put out 271 Hp in a time when HP ratings were inflatted (engines were tested without stock exhausts amoung other things) the new N.A. cobra engine puts out 320 hp with the stock exhaust on. For it's time the 289 HP was an incredible engine. (it was produced about 40 years ago). It put out great HP and unlike the fat Chevy 350 was relatively light and small (one of the reasons Shelby choose it for the A.C. cobra) But it doesn't out perform the new Cobra engine.

If the Chevy small block (you forgot the LS1, it's a 346 cid and I was unaware that Chevy made 4000 cid! Wow now that's some small block) are so great why did Chevy consistantly fall short when putting its 305 head to head with Ford's 302? Both engines are about the same displacement, both over head valve and the 302 was a stronger engine.

Instead of improving on the anemic 305 they drop it and put the Vette's 350 in. To get around it's poor mpg and avoid a gas guzzler tax they had to use a six speed manual and have that stupid 1st to 4th block that forces you to shift from 1st gear to 4th gear if you aren't acclerating quickly. The last time you could compare apples to apples between Ford and Chevy small blocks was the 302 vs 305 and the 302 come out ahead. Mustangs had to resort to racing GN during that time because the firebirds and camaros were so slow. (or worse yet the Monte Carlo Super Slow)
