Turbolasers work like this. Anti-proton particle energy (very destructive, see "Doomsday Machine" TOS) is used. We know that because Proton torpedoes are similiar but more powerful verions of laser/blaster weapons, but thats another story. Anyway the laser ACB fires at a target, the anti-protons are accelerated by the laser ACB. The particles do the real damage, not the laser in fact the light seen in many spectums is harmless, and used like tracer rounds. So all that stuff about Trek navigatinal deflectors being able to stop Wars lasers. True! Its just to bad that ain't what does the damage. When the lasers are stopped by something say like a hull or just nav defletors the photons are deflected but the much heavier protons with the kinetic energy from being accelerated by the laser ACB would continue on. This is why the ISD point defense laser fired at the Millennium Falcon caused it to be rocked so hard. Even focused photons don't have that kind of kinetic energy alone.
