Its too bad that our current leaders appear to be soo uneducated... There are many forms of intelligence, and maybe george bush is a genious at captivating the interest of the voters, but so was Hitler. Now obviously i cant make the streach to say bush is anywhere near that bad, but the point is we dont need a popular president, we need a moral leader who can face the real issues that plague our country. It starts in high school. We elect the popular ones, the funny kids. How did luke ahern become the student congress president? He is a great baseball player maybe... but he went to every school board meeting and told them life was just dandy and the attendence policy was their finest work. We need to start becomming thoughtful voters, and thoughtful people, on all levels. We need to realize that the comfort our money provides us does not mean we can just sit back and let our government run until we encounter a huge problem.

As a great philosopher, Emanual Kant, said, "morality is the inescapable condition of politics." (Kant happend to write a book called "Perpetual Peace" and you can imagine how he feels about violence). Without morality, we cannot have politics, and we cannot move as a country or as a people. Here is our problem. We have leaders who have no morals except those that lie in their money. Bush is driven by money. Our country is driven by the dollar. We all know that pure reliance on money will only make us miserable, yet we are trapped, because our society has its foundations of paper bills. That is why we are always impressed with people like Thoreau, Emerson, and the more modern Christoper McCandless. THINKING is the first step in the right direction... but ACTING must follow close behind. Without both, we cannont create positive change. To think and not act, or to act and not think, is to not exist, as Hannah Arendt would say. There is no right or wrong decision unless it is made in ignorance, and we will always have differing opinions of politics, but this individuality is necessary because it brings up all sides of an issue.

Anyway, thanks to brett for taking the time to set this up, its the kind of thoughtful interest in real issues and ideas that reassures me that there are great people out there.
