Andy, i almost feel weird saying that i agree with most of what you said. I think we agree on the problem, but we disagree on the solution. First of all, why did you have to bring Niccolo into this??? he is a genius, a republican genius, but a genius none the less. I agree with a lot of what Machiavelli has to say. I think people are greedy by nature, they tend to be fickle and they have (often, but not always) a hunger for power. Maccivelli's most redeeming quality was that he dealed more heavily with the "is" than the "ought to be" However, i dont think that people would want the type of governmet he suggest. He depicts a prince that is decieteful, powerful, and completely manipulative of the people. I suppose life would be easy... people would lose much of their rights to think and act. However, i dont think this is what people really want. I still think that what we need is a leader that we can look up to. We need someone now in the middle east like the gandhi we had in India. if you look at what he did... he turned the greed and hate that most people were feeling towards eachother and turned that into peace. Maybe i am foolish to expect peace... but can you imagine if there was no concept of peace? To simply write peace off as being impossible, or the primary solution, would be a huge error. Hopefully we will realize that power is more easily gained by winning the hearts of the men around us, not terrifying them. This type of power also seems to be a more positive type. As for your comment on religion... you couldnt be more right. What a wonderful god everyone has, telling us to go kill anyone with a differnt god. plato said that the man who invented god was a genious, but its probably the kind of genious that Einstein had... they couldnt have forseen how horrible their creating would have been. There are positive aspects to religion, but look how much hate it breeds. I guess i hope people will one day realize that peace is the less expensive, more mature solution to the problems we are facing.
