Subject: Underground rivers and caverns of central Kentucky

Central Kentucky is made up of limestone which has been eaten away over the millenia, forming caverns and underground rivers. Have you ever heard of "Roaring Spring"? On South Elkhorn Creek, off U.S. 421 just South of Frankfort, there is a cliff face with a hole (probably 10 feet by 20 feet)at the base which has a great gusher of water coming out. This comes from all the sink holes, branches and creeks around Lexington area. I heard about it before my first canoe trip on the South Fork and asked how I would recognize the area. The answer was "you'll know when you get there". You cannot miss it! I would like to know just how extensive the drainage area is. If Lexington could tap it and pipe it back, Kentucky American could be put out of business. Tribes of people under Lex,? I don't know but if there are, I hope they are good swimmers.
