Subject: Tunnels Under Lexington

I remember going on a class field trip during my college days in the mid 80's.

We went to the State Hospital in Lexington, but honestly I was paying more attention to the girl I was riding with that how we got there.

During the tour, we were shown a door that reportedly led to a series of tunnels that connected the Medical Center with the old LUNATIC ASYLUM that was no longer in service. This may be the old asylum on the Transy Campus... but I'm not sure. We were told that in times past the patients sometimes were moved to the tunnel and flogged (whipped) in an effort to treat certain forms of mental illness, and that many did not survive the beatings.

The tunnel, from pieces of information I gathered later, connected with others in that area of Lexington to convey patients from the main hospital, asylum, affiliated doctors offices, and morgue.

Maybe this will help you in your research.
