Subject: Lexington's own James Brown

I was born in Lexington and lived there through college thus I have had many encounters with the street person known as "James Brown". However, the very first time I met the man he wasn't going by "James Brown"! It was 1985 or so and a friend and I were eating lunch near UK's campus when "James" approached us. He was holding a copy of Sports Illustrated with Sugar Ray Leonard on the cover. He kept pointing to the magazine and then at himself saying "That's me, I'm Sugar Ray" he then tried to get us to buy the magazine from him and graciously offered to autograph it for us. Finally the manager threw him out but only after he threw several punches at my friend, pulling them at the last possible moment. I think he was trying to be good-natured and show off his boxing skills but hew was also very drunk and some of them came awfully close. Another time much later I was at a campus keg party where "James" was enjoying the free beer and entertaining the crowd. Later that night the host found James in his bedroom changing into his (the host's) clothes. Finally, there is a hilarious story concerning "James" in Blue Persuasion, a 'zine put out by Aaron Lee in the early 90's. He isn't the central character of the story but, as usual, he totally steals the show in the end.
