Last evening, Miss Louisiana Melissa McConnel presented HOPE Humanitarian Awards to two men who minister to the incarcerated men of Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. I was one of those men.
The affirming response of Miss Louisiana and her family to a ministry in whose God's presence manifested itself to me through the people and changed my life when I was an inmate of Angola sends a message that: God is real; He lives and works His love through people like Melissa; and, through God, we truly are better than the worst thing we have ever done.
I thank Melissa for giving hope to the hopeless by living the word of God through her compassionate and courageous act of entering into the beast of a maximum security prison to feed it with a love that changes hearts.
