Subject: A Tale of Zidane's Tail (FF9 fanfiction)

[A Tale of Zidane's Tail] ;; Final Fantasy 9

Light poured through the window of my room and onto the floor. I un-stuffed my face from the pillow and looked at it for a minute. Why wouldn't it let me sleep? Halfway sitting up, I scratched my back and tried to remind myself not to stay up so late.

I slunk out of bed and looked out my window. Huh. Clouds. On an air ship, you see a lot of clouds when you look outside. You'd think you'd get tired of them, but I never do. They're always different, but they never change ... does that make sense? They're always white and puffy and stationary, but some are cottony mounds and some are thin white strips ... and it's just neat, that's all.

"Zidane!"

Oh, did they have to call now? I mean, how necessary was I at this hour? I turned away from the window and grabbed my comb off the night stand. Running it quickly through my hair (and wincing when it hit a tangle -- that really smarts), I saw something behind me in the mirror.

I whipped around, but it was gone ... I turned again, but I could still see it behind me. After I had turned several circles, I realized it was nothing more then my tail.

Oh my. Chasing my tail ... how completely embarrassing.

I pulled it in front of me and stared at it for a moment, and, I swear, I think it was staring at me. How did it *do* that?!

I don't know where my tail comes from. Please don't be smart and say my parents, I've figured that much out. But were they both humans with tails? Or was Mom a human and Dad a cat?

Eww. I don't want to think about that.

Maybe there's a whole race of people like me. Maybe they all live in a place up in the clouds. Wouldn't that be neat? All their things would be adapted so that your tail wouldn't get in the way, like chairs not having backs to them or pants with tail holes already cut in the seat. I don't know, maybe they all wear skirts.

Do they all have skinny white tails like mine? Some might be big and furry, some might be short little stumps. And they'd come in all sorts of colors, like brown and black and tan ...

"Zidane!"

"Coming!" I hollered, then tried to comb my hair again.

My mind came back to my people, though. Were they friendly? Maybe they were peaceful, and tried to stay out of the political affairs of Gaia -- and that's why I've never heard of them. If I ever met them, would they have all sorts of solutions to our problems, and cures for when we get sick?

Flip side. What if they weren't nice? For all I know, they could be in Alexandria's dungeons, rotting away for hideous crimes that I didn't even know could be committed. Did they even speak my language, or did they run around grunting?

"Zidane! I need you down here now!"

He sounded mad. I sat the comb down and wondered if he'd mind that I was in my night shirt, because it didn't seem like I'd have a second to change.

Boy. I wonder if any other body parts could bring up near as many questions.

"Coming," I shouted, and ran out my bedroom door.

I like Zidane. It was my first nickname before Draciel. Anyway, I wanted to play around with him a little bit. This story was written right after I finished the game FF9. But if something's not right, it's just my style, and it's totally not my fault.
