Subject: symbols rather than letters

 i have a 1996 compaq presario. when i bootup the logo is scrambled then all the letters come up as symbols or start as letters and turn into symbols. occassionally the computer comes on o.k. but when i click on an icon the desktop scrambles. i will have 10 pointers on the screen at once and none of them move. help!
