Subject: A Time of Wonder

That 7/11 posting of the 1980s museum map sure brought back memories. My dad would drive me to CMSI on what seemed a monthly basis to get me out of Mom's hair. The chick hatchery was amazing. I also recall a transparent beehive in the same room, though I could be mistaken. I remember the touchscreen computer exhibit with colored blocks in the brochure (and all this time I thought I had just imagined there was such a thing in the '80s).

But Mathematica was the cherry on top. This room was why I went into mathematics in college. I think they had the Eames Studio "Powers of 10" running on loop for decades here (again, I might be fantasizing). The binomial distribution exhibit was particularly cool. My dad helped us make a replica of this using an inclined plywood sheet and finishing nails for the grid. Science fair gold!

While the current CSC has some noteworthy installations ("Hypar", for instance), I still have much fondness for CMSI of the past. I wish I could take my son to THAT science museum, considering the myopic variety of exhibits at the Taco Bell Discovery Center in Santa Ana (which is just a playground).

This archive of photos has rejuvenated my sense of wonder. Thanks!
